MTV’s Quarter-Life Crisis

Hashim at Hip-Hop Blogs had an interesting no-brainer take on MTV’s new zeal in approaching the digital domain.

Hiring Lonelygirl15 can’t fix all those problems. Y’see, the net is neither a boogie monster or genie. Getting web video or social networking right won’t sink or save MTV until they fix the core of what they do - music television.”

For many of the same reasons that Hashim described in his post, I think it’s time to get back to the drafting table, dust off the T-square and leave the shoes to the shoemakers. It’s time to put the M back in MTV. I’ve also seen the Save MTV Chi! petition, (which prompted my previous MIA post update), but I’m not signing for the above stated reasons.

I had high hopes for all of the MTV World linear networks, but perhaps they were inherently flawed from the start. In comparision to MTV Tres, which incorporates (for the lack of a better term) Latin culture as a whole and all of the flavors that come with it, the first linear networks maintained the ethnic divisions within Pan-Asian culture. Instead of presenting a larger audience (All Asian Americans) a wide variety of content (Bhangra, K-Pop, Rock, Hip-Hop, Dance) and using the platform to cross-pollinate and unite the different cultures -they missed the mark by being caught up in the, “This network is for US” trap. Asian-Americans have made strides, but certainly haven’t surpassed the Latin market in America as far as musical influence (Latin Billboard Charts anyone?).

Therefore, in the spirit of optimism -if it is true that MTV is actively pursuing new vehicles and placements for this network, then I suggest that we join up with our compatriots in Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia and the Philippines and present MTV ASIA to the American auidience. I’ll sign that petition with a real pen if it got passed to me.

Only then will we ever see The Real World: Chennai -seven strangers picked to live in a converted textile mill… anytime soon.

Undercover All-Star Weekend Anthems II

A lot of flavors reside on the West Coast, making the task of picking a suitable anthem a challenging one. Not to snub the Yae -I’m going to save that post for later and instead get into some LA biz for now. That said, a good anthem gets the whole clic’ wild and motivated, and if you can ice it for a decade and drop it like it’s fresh -you got a certified banger on your hands.

Back before he was hooking up buckets and pushing eXtreme deodorant, Xzibit was cuttin’ tracks with other members of the Likwit Crew, most notably King T & Tha Alkaholiks. After touring with them in 95′, Loud Records set him up with a recording deal and released his debut album, “At the Speed of Life“.

Featuring production by Diamond D, DJ Muggs, DJ Pen One, E-Swift & Thayod Ausar -along with an appearance by King T himself, the record was moderately successful and was boosted by Ausar produced, “Paparazzi“.

Containing a sample of Pavane in F-sharp minor (Gabriel Faure), the record took general shots at entertainers that he considered to be in it, “only for the money and the fame” -and later took a few back from EDI Amin on Makaveli’s, “Bomb First (My Second Reply)”.

The irony of it all is that Xzibit’s escalator rise to fame led to bad blood with his Likwit bretheren and left an older generation of fans scratching their heads everytime someone tossed him the keys to the whip.

Can’t be mad though, noone really expects rappers to stay broke and underground forever anymore. Especially when The Sopranos are kicking down some publishing dough (Pax Soprano episode).

Undercover All-Star Weekend Anthems I

Once again, the media is pitting the East and West Coast against each other -and it’s about to come to a head (9EST,6PST). Luckily it’s basketball, not blastin’ all comers…

Blahzay, Blahzay (DJ/Producer PF Cuttin’ & Emcee Outloud) laid down a slow and calculated rise in the music scene, intially clicking up in 1985, and quietly lacing tracks for Masta Ace and Craig G.

But this particular joint, “Danger” blew them up in late 95′ and led to their August 1996 debut LP, “Blah, Blah, Blah“.

Marinate on this and I’ll be back with the WEST post.
