The Dock of the Bay II -Rick Rock

His discog is thick with collaborations with artists like Tupac Shakur, Celly Cell, E-40, Method Man, Snoop Dogg, Busta Rhymes, et al.

With a career that spans over a decade, Rick Rock just might be the next, “I can’t believe I slept on this,” producer to jump into the spotlight. Although his career has had some strange twists and turns, it seems that this architect of the hyphy sound has finally cemented his rightful place in hip-hop history -beyond some random, freak incidents (read further).

Rick Rock in the Studio -Thanks to Crate Kings for the link!

Rick is well known these days for his membership in the global hyphy elite -flippin’ up Digable Planets and Corey Hart samples for E-40 and The Federation (Yay Area, Stunna Glasses at Night) respectively. His relationship with Doonie Baby of The Federation goes back to their days in the short-lived group Cosmic Slop Shop (along with emcee Big Lurch), which was signed in 1997 to the MCA distributed Mtume Music Group imprint and would later be credited with the label’s first release, “Da Family.”

Ironically, James Mtume -a precussionist and the label’s founder was the subject of Setsasonic’s diss record, “Talkin’ All That Jazz,” which was a reaction to Mtume’s anti-sampling stance. Big Lurch would also be sent upstate for life in 2002 on murder charges -a PCP fueled confrontation that involved a girlfriend and cannibalism. This prompted Rick and Doonie to move on and forward back to the Bay, eventually joining forces with young local yay area rappers Goldie & Stresmatic to form The Federation.

Early in 2006, The Federation found themelves signed to Warner Bros. Records and their second single, “I Wear my Stunna Glasses at Night” the ubiquitous club anthem north of Bakersfield, CA and throughout the Nation of Thizzlam.

When The Dock of the Bay series continues -you’ll want to hop a freight and connect like a conjunction….

Free Clinton Sparks!

Clinton Sparks is opening up his entire catalog of mixtapes for FREE 99!

As JJ from Still Listen to Gangsta Music points out in his post, the legal environment (bad) is causing some artists to release mixtapes for free (ie. Talib Kweli/Madlib’s collab) in the hope of benefiting from the mixtape’s potential reach via free distribution.

Speaking of Madlib, once upon a time in 2001, he was a guest DJ on the Garth Trinidad hosted programme Chocolate City on KCRW. The 60min set was archived and offered as a free download on the KCRW website.

-A lot of you know the story, someone bootlegged the recording and began selling it, Madlib never authorized it, thought the cover sucked, doesn’t make a dime etc. etc.

Here’s the tracklisting…put it on a chrome tape while you tune up your CR-X and get all nostalgic.

Pandora’s Box Shut? or Join the SaveNetRadio Coalition

I got this in my inbox today, naturally I wanted to share it with everyone…

Hi, it’s Tim from Pandora,

I’m writing today to ask for your help. The survival of Pandora and all of Internet radio is in jeopardy because of a recent decision by the Copyright Royalty Board in Washington, DC to almost triple the licensing fees for Internet radio sites like Pandora. The new royalty rates are irrationally high, more than four times what satellite radio pays and broadcast radio doesn’t pay these at all. Left unchanged, these new royalties will kill every Internet radio site, including Pandora.

In response to these new and unfair fees, we have formed the SaveNetRadio Coalition, a group that includes listeners, artists, labels and webcasters. I hope that you will consider joining us.

Please sign our petition urging your Congressional representative to act to save Internet radio: http://capwiz.com/saveinternetradio/issues/alert/?alertid=9631541

Please feel free to forward this link/email to your friends - the more petitioners we can get, the better.

Understand that we are fully supportive of paying royalties to the artists whose music we play, and have done so since our inception. As a former touring musician myself, I’m no stranger to the challenges facing working musicians. The issue we have with the recent ruling is that it puts the cost of streaming far out of the range of ANY webcaster’s business potential.

I hope you’ll take just a few minutes to sign our petition - it WILL make a difference. As a young industry, we do not have the lobbying power of the RIAA. You, our listeners, are by far our biggest and most influential allies.

As always, and now more than ever, thank you for your support.

April 13, 2007: Peanut Butter Wolf and Honeycut
Peanut Butter Wolf is a left coast hip-hop legend, superstar producer, master turntablist, and head of Stones Throw Records, known as “L.A.’s pre-eminent indie hip-hop label, an aesthetic beacon of national stature, and a model for anyone who might dream of handcrafting a record label” (L.A. Weekly). He serves up a flowing mix of funk and hip-hop along with pop, experimental jazz, electronica, and whatever else his wide-ranging musical imagination dreams up.

Opening the evening is Honeycut, three San Franciscans who craft an incredibly hip, totally accessible soul-infused indie funk with atmospheric vocals and high-energy synth. Hear for yourself why they’ve been called “the Bay area’s own answer to Gnarls Barkley” (sfist.com).
